Inspect, Clean, Repair: Keep Your Fence Looking Great This Summer

Various environmental factors will wear down your fencing, regardless of its type. As a general rule, wetter seasons are more damaging, particularly to metal, since water leads to corrosion. However, warm weather is also known to cause its fair share of damage thanks to the excessive heat, sporadic showers, and regular use of the fencing. Thankfully, there are three things that you can do to maintain your fence and keep it looking great.

1. Inspect

While this is something that you need to do on a regular basis throughout the year, summer is a great time to perform an annual inspection. Check for any visual damage to your fence, such as rust, but also check for stability issues. You also need to ensure that the foundation of the posts have not softened or shifted due to the weathering from the cold, wet months and that they are indeed stable. Make sure to also inspect the hinges, latches and fixtures; these need to be operating properly and free of any rust and corrosion. If your fence is made out of wood, check for rot.

2. Clean

Since the weather is warm, summer makes for the perfect time to get your fence spic and span. In addition, summer is also the time of year when plant growth is at an all-time high. If plants, especially vines, are growing on the fence, it could cause damage, including structural instability, so this needs to be dealt with sooner rather than later. Pressure washing the fence is an easy way to deal with the plants and vines, while also cleaning the fence and removing any dirt and debris that has built up on the fence over time.

3. Repair

Once the fence has been inspected and cleaned, you need to perform necessary repairs, painting, and staining. If you have a metal fence, it likely won't require painting. However, if you have a wooden fence, it will likely require an additional coat of stain, as this will help to deter damaging environmental elements, such as water.

Fences are designed to last, but they can only do this if they are maintained properly. By inspecting, cleaning, and repairing your fence on a regular basis, you can help ensure that you will be able to enjoy your fence for many years to come with little to no major repairs. However, if a repair is necessary and you need assistance with it, don't hesitate to call in a professional fence company like Rut Fencing.
